Because to pull the head on an engine with 180,000-300,000 kilometers on it and not replace the piston rings, etc., would be an incomplete job. But even that won't fix the misfiring problem, or will only fix it for a short time. Therefore, you need to find a technician who can 'fix the brain' of your engine control unit (ECU). I don't know after how many misfires it happens, but it doesn't take many for the unit to go into a fault mode and cut the spark to the non-working cylinder. All of this will cost upwards of $4000.
